While I have met few people who actually want to be 23 again, the one thing we can all agree on is that now that we can afford talented stylists to take care of our hair and wear makeup that doesn’t come from a drugstore, we’d like to at least look 23 again. Fuller, shinier hair and plumper, brighter skin. Yes, please.
I’m going to share a little secret with you. With the right tools and a few insider hacks, getting that youthful glow is much easier than you think. Remember, it is less about finding products to mask the problems and more about nurturing what you already have. Beauty from the inside out. Let’s get started.
STEP 1: GET HAIR THAT SHINES
Whether it is due to over-processing, product overload or the sad reality that our hair loses shine as we age, dull-looking hair is old-looking hair. Luckily, there are some very easy, at-home things you can do to give your hair that twentysomething luster.
Firstly, invest in quality shampoo and conditioners that work with your hair type. If you get your hair colored or if you regularly have keratin treatments, sulfate-free shampoo is a must. Even if you have found the best products for your hair, it is important to mix it up once in a while. Unlike skin products, which work better the longer and more consistently you use them, hair products tend to build up on the scalp and hair follicle. Change is good.
My hands-down favorite shampoo and conditioner to mix into my routine is Darshana. I love, love, love that it is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic formulation rich in antioxidants and omega oils. Secondly, Darshana contains no sulfates, parabens, silicones, artificial fragrance, phosphates or phthalates. Does your hair need a little extra TLC, try their hair oil as an overnight scalp and hair treatment. You won’t be sorry. Indian women have seriously enviable hair and products like these are their secret weapons.
Apple cider vinegar may be one of the trendiest wellness ingredients right now, but for good reason. I had my doubts too — until I tried it. Simply mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water. Shampoo your hair as normal and then in between the shampoo and conditioning steps rinse with ACV. Make sure it soaks all the way down to the scalp and massaging it in before rinsing. Then condition as normal. I do this once a week and not only does it do an incredible job removing residue, it seals the hair cuticle and leaves my hair looking fresh-from-the-salon shiny.
And lastly, let’s not forget eyebrows and eyelashes. Just like your hair, they thin out over time. But thanks to another timeless beauty trick, you can reverse over-plucked-90s-eyebrow shame. If you don’t have a jar of organic castor oil in your medicine cabinet yet, now is the time. After applying it to my eyebrows every night for two weeks, not only were the tiny hairs much softer, they were also longer and magically sprouting up all over the place. You can also apply it to eyelashes (top only and sparingly).
STEP 2: FOCUS ON BRIGHTER SKIN
Do you ever have those mornings where your makeup just doesn’t look right? And even if you are wearing your favorite brightly colored top, you look tired? Dull skin is the culprit. Luckily, this is quite easily remedied.
Firstly, exfoliate. I’m a big fan of using fruit enzyme and lactic acid peels. They are gentler on the skin and work wonders. My current obsession is Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Petal Peel. Incorporating ingredients like rose hip oil, fruit and lactic acids and hyaluronic acid, it gets sloughs off dead skin, plumps and the vitamin C brightens. This is practically a foolproof way to look younger isntantly.
Speaking of vitamin C, for many years it has been my number one go-to for brighter skin. It fights free radicals (i.e. the things that cause skin cells to breakdown overtime and age you), is proven to lighten discoloration (hello, sun spots) and diminish fine lines. Abella Cellution C topical vitamin C is part of my daily regime. It goes on like an oil, but absorbs into the skin almost instantly and doesn’t leave behind an oily residue. And because it contains a whopping 12% vitamin C, it is powerful tool for stimulating collagen and protecting against the damaging effects of UV rays. It really is a win-win all around.
STEP 3: BANISH CELLULITE
Body brushing is one of the easiest and best things you can do to improve the appearance of the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. It takes less than five minutes and the results are visible.
I recommend a handheld, round soft-bristled brush. Then, starting with the bottom of the feet, move in circles traveling upwards toward the heart concentrating on problem areas. Same thing with the upper body — start with hands, working your way in toward the center of the body. Not only does it exfoliate, it also improves circulation and encourages lymphatic drainage. Obviously, the more you do it, the better the results will be, so make it a daily habit.
Top tip: Combine body brushing with a skin firming cream or gel post-shower. Bikini season just got way less intimidating.
STEP 4: TAKE COLLAGEN
My fixation on collagen began when I decided I had to do something about the snap, crackle, pop of my joints during yoga. It was getting embarrassing. So, I started researching collagen. Turns out, it is another thing our bodies just stop producing effectively as we age. Joy.
Collagen is one of the most important building blocks in the body both inside and out and supplementing has seriously plumping effects on the skin, strengthening nails and it makes hair grow at breakneck speed. Is collagen the magic bullet for looking younger? Quite possibly.
Dosage, however, is everything. I started out with Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides in powder form. All the reviews said take two scoops a day, so I did. I was adding one to my coffee and then having a second scoop (in something) in the evening before bed. To be honest, I felt like two scoops was a lot to get in during the day, and if I missed the second dosage I definitely noticed. I also had to cut my nails like every other day; it was out of control.
Now, I mix it up and use Vital Proteins in my morning coffee (it is tasteless and makes coffee a little creamier) and take Reservage Collagen Booster supplements in the evenings. I have noticed a huge improvement in my joints and the fine lines under my eyes have disappeared. What is not to love?
STEP 5: DRINK WATER, THEN DRINK SOME MORE
Like it or not, proper hydration is the answer to most of your beauty dilemmas — actually, to many, if not most, of your health dilemmas, too. Dehydration leads to dry, wrinkle-prone skin, breakouts, headaches, midday slump, overeating and can lead to a whole host of medical issues as well. Two liters a day is a minimum and, of course, you need more if you are exercising, drinking a lot of coffee or tea, if it is hot out or you are drinking alcohol. Remember, if you are thirsty you are already dehydated.
Try this. Commit to drinking enough water every day for a week. Like really commit to it and see what happens. I promise you your skin will look plumper (hello, hydration), your head will be clearer and you will 100% feel better all around.
